Thanksgiving Break

It sure was nice to have a break from school finally. It was much overdue. I got to go visit my family in Huntsville. My sister was in town with her kids, and it was way too hard to leave them. They're just my cute little nephews. It was really nice to see everyone though. My older brother is getting married in a couple weeks (in the middle of finals), so it was good to see him just in case I don't make it to the wedding. My dad was also able to make it in town for the week. He's been on a long term leave in California, but his boss was nice enough to give him a "business trip" to Huntsville. So, we were one "big happy family" most of the time. I like Thanksgiving.

Technology in the Classroom

I think one of the most awesome things about teaching today are all the resources and technology we have that can enhance the classroom learning environment. Whether it's being able to do a gradebook on the computer or bringing a powerpoint presentation to the class. Some cool things for math are the ability to hookup graphing mechanisms to projectors so that students can see what is going on in functions. There are so many resources out there to make learning better. It amazing what we can do now.

A Much Needed Break

Did anyone else find the gradebooks pretty cool. I mean, I've seen them before and stuff and used excel before, but it was pretty cool messing around with them and the loan calculator. I really enjoyed those projects. A very valuable lesson learned.
I do have to say though, that I did enjoy our break from class this week. I was much needed time to study for my many tests this week.

Long Time No See

Well, It's been a while since I've posted anything in here. I guess that's what happens during the middle of the semester. We've been working on spreadsheets in class this week and now are starting databases (I think). We've also been doing finishing touches on our websites and such.
I really enjoyed working on the websites. It was pretty cool doing them all in html. I'd worked on a website using FrontPage, and it was a lot easier to do "cool stuff". But, html makes is like writing a code, and being a math major, anything having to do with a puzzle of sorts, intrigues me.

Teaching Post

Well, I'm not really sure what to post about teaching. I'm a math-education major, and I know there aren't many of you out there, so I'm trying to think of something that is about teaching-in-general. I was a tutor in high school, and I am currently a teacher at the Sylvan Learning Center. Many times, I will work with students who have zero desire to work on school work that day. What are some ways to motivate kids to want to do school work, besides just saying "do it or you go to the office"??

Presentations

Well, we tried to finish up the presentations this week, but me an another girl will have to present on Monday. It was pretty interesting "getting to know" about everyone. I introduced two girls in the classs, Cassandra and Tiffany. I really enjoyed hearing about I think it was Sara Perkins presentaion. She talked about her adventures living on Salt Cay for the summer. It was pretty interesting learning about life on a tiny island. Also, I enjoyed the girl who did her presentation on toilets. It takes a lot of courage to tell everyone about some of our fears, and she made it real humorous and interesting (and gross at times). Overall, everyone did a real good job.

PowerPoint Presentations

Well, we've been doing presentations this week. I'm just waiting my turn. It has actually been pretty interesting getting to know a little about everyone in the class. I've learned the sooner you get it done with the better, but I guess someone has to go last. I'd rather just volunteer and get it over with. Besides them being recorded I don't think doing them will be that bad. I know this sounds kind of random. I'm just typing what pops into my head first.

PowerPoint Presentation

I'm working on my presentation right now. I'm not really confident about my topic. I didn't want to do the "this is me as a baby", "this is me at 6", etc... I come from a pretty big family (7 kids), so I was going to do a slide on each one of the people in my (+ married in "kids"). So I'd have my parents (2 slides), the kids (7 slides), my husband and my sister's husband(2 slides), so there's 11 slides and of course there'd be a title slide (so 12 slides). I don't know if it's "cheesy" or not, but I thought I'd do that. I'm almost done, so anyway. That's that right now.
